Dear members and followers,

The Corona pandemic has a huge impact on all of us. For example, it meant that we as Utrecht BIJ1 had to cancel our upcoming events. As a department, we have used these past few weeks to try and find a way to keep working under these new circumstances and we want to bring you up to date about the latest developments in the following statement. In addition, we want to invite you to keep building this amazing movement in Utrecht with us, be it online for the upcoming months.

Unfortunately, two of our board members have resigned in the past months due to personal circumstances, which means that the current board only consists of three people. The staffing is insufficient for the amount of work that needs to be done in the start-up phase of our department. Consequently, this meant that we weren’t always able to do everything we wanted to do and that some of our plans had to be delayed or come to a halt. For this reason our full attention is required to engage new board members and advisers and strengthen our committees so we can start developing a sustainable local department policy with a solid team and diverse perspectives. We’re very pleased to announce that Damla Yaris has joined our team as our first board adviser! You can read Damla’s introduction through the following link:

Secondly, we want to pay further attention to diversity and inclusion among our members as well as within our board. We're looking for additional board advisers from various backgrounds who want to support our cause. If you would like to contribute to our board by sharing your perspectives, feel free to contact us! The terms and duration of your participation are negotiable. Experience in a board position or a degree are not required. As board adviser you can also gain experience to join the board as a regular member later on. The current board is happy to help you along the way.

Furthermore, a brand-new committee has been established: the member-recruitment committee! The goal of this committee is to increase the number of memberships in a sustainable, inclusive and diverse way. Feel free to contact us if you’re interested! We’re also looking for additional members in other committees, namely: social media, action & mobilisation and politics & policies.

We think it is of great importance to stay in touch with each other during this crisis and we are curious to see how everyone is doing. Thus, we want to arrange a Jitsi video-call on Tuesday evening, April 14. During this video-call we will have the opportunity to check in with one another, think of ways in which we can help each other and think about what we can do for Utrecht during these trying times. This call is an open invite to anyone who wants to join: members, supporters and followers. We have created a Facebook event and we will also add it to our upcoming newsletter e-mail.

P.S. If you are not on our mailing list yet, but want to be, you can send us an e-mail at

Lastly, we want to wish everyone well during this time, especially those who have been impacted by the Corona pandemic the most. If you think we as Utrecht BIJ1 can be of assistance in any way, don’t hesitate to reach out to us via e-mail at
